Can I cancel my auto insurance?
I go through American Family and they are killin me. I recently bought a car from a dealership, which of course I had to get full coverage. My rate is now ridiculous and I have found a WAY better rate with a different company so my question is, can I just cancel my insurance? They sent me a bill for $434. I paid half of it today, do I need to pay the other half before I cancel? (Its just hard for me to make two $200 dollar payments for one bill)
I will have to renew my policy in October, and I don’t want to do that. I just don’t want to hurt my credit or receive cancellation fees, so whats the best way to do this?
Refund? Really?
Cancel your current policy (and get the refund for the unused portion) and go with the better deal (as long as it is ACTUALLY a better deal).

This has nothing to do with a credit score so cancel at any time. The unused balance will be refunded to you.

Secure insurance through the other carrier, then cancel the AF policy (if you do it any other way there will be a lapse in coverage). They should refund the "unused" portion you have paid for.

They will probably hunt you. I would put a tap on my phone.

First you will get the new insurance policy activated, and once that is active and you have proof of insurance from them, you will forward that proof of insurance with a written signed request from your to your current agent, and they will cancel your current policy as of the date of the new one. This is the best way to do it, to avoid any lapse in coverage.
If you have already paid them 1/2 of the bill due, you should get a refund of the money for the time that you didnt use the policy. meaning if the 1/2 bill would pay you for 3 mo, and you only have it for 1 mo, youll get a refund for 2 mo.
However, some companies might short-rate you and keep a certain % of their fully earned premium. You might want to double check with your carrier. Some companies might also charge a cancellation fee.
But yes, you can cancel your insurance whenever you want!

Yes you can cancel the policy whenever you want. American Family will prorate the refund. So, if you paid for 3 months of insurance and cancelled after 1 month, you’ll get 2 months of premium back. Oftentimes your new insurance company will send the cancel form to your old company on your behalf.
