Freedom of Press? – ON HEALTHCARE REFORM?
According to the Connecticut Coalition for Universal Health Care, the United States is the only industrialized nation not to have universal healthcare coverage to its citizens. In 1993 Bill Clinton seeked to install such a system called a multi-payer health care system that would focus on the center of the healthcare crisis of America: COST and COVERAGE. Today, over 40 million Americans lack healthcare coverage and many more millions are with inadequate healthcare insurance coverage. However the media, particularly conservative stations such as FOX labeled the plan instead of described it. As a result people were told that this was "socialized medicine," and as a result of polls, most opposed it. Criticism of lack of coverage by companies in a few ads were hardly or never aired because of the threat of lawsuit by the company for "libel and slander". Is this freedom of press? Or is press controlled by the market?
the first answer shows the reason we don't have it. each american feels that he/she needs his own money for their own consumption. after all, people judge us based on what we own. if we give away our money to healthcare, well, i can't wear a pin that says that. then i won't be able to afford a new deck and my neighbor will have more status than me. who cares if people are dying of things that could be easily treated if they could afford to see a doctor, i need another house. that's the american mindset. we're not willing to make the sacrifice.
I want my taxes lower buddy. I shouldn't have to pay for anyone's healthcare.

Americans are brainwashed to hate the word socialized.

I agree something drastic needs to been done. But socialized medical care is not the way to go. People in Canada who need serious operations flee to the U.S. or they will die waiting in line and that is a fact.
Health care costs are out of control. A pill that costs 13 cents to make is hiked up to $3 or more. I read Clinton's plan very carefully and it was not the way to go, it would put us in the same position as Europe and Canada. We don't need or want that.
Let's come up with a new plan. I don't care what it's called. But there is no excuse that the elderly have to eat dog food because they cannot afford their medication. That might be a bit of an overstatement but not much.
The republicans don't seem to give a &%#@ and the democrats pander: say whatever people want to hear to get a vote. I say this because look at how many years this nonsense has gone on. How hard can it be to sit down and think this important issue out and develop a workable caring plan?
Big oil and the pharmaceutical companies seem to rule the world. The media doesn't give a flip–whatever produces ratings it the bottom line.
I agree this is maybe the most important social issue facing America. Let's listen closely to what people running for the highest office in the land have to say about it.
