Is auto insurance a ripoff???

I have been driving for 10 yrs (no accidents, no tickets & never been pulled over) i have paid about $125 per month, thats $15,000 that i have been cheated out of. & if i were to get in an accident I would have to pay them a deductible..is it safe to say that Americans are being cheated out of billions ???
Sheesh $15,000….

Basically insurance is the idea that none of us have a million dollars to cover that crazy chance that we seriously injure someone or even $10,000 if we just total someone's parked car. So we all agree we'll put our little amounts of money into this bin and then when one of us do have that accident, we'll take from the bin and pay it.

However maybe you are being cheated because this is my first year with insurance on my own car (I had a company car before so I didn't need insurance) I have 3 speeding tickets on my record, I have full coverage and I only pay about $93 a month. I should be paying more than you if you are a good driver.

The way every big corporation is bailed out starting with Mortgage companies,banks,insurance companies,auto industry, airlines and the list is un-ending. One day that is not too far when the US Government needs a bailout.Then who is going to bail out US Government and common American?

Citibank, AIG, and the American automanufacturers. Don’t they owe it to the government to bail them out?

Specifically, which major carrier (Geico, State Farm, American Family, etc.) do you feel has the best rates for quality coverage and good customer service. This would be for two autos and new home coverage. I live in the Midwest, so answers from those in this part of the US are preferred. Any supporting info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Farm Bureau or State Farm.

Whatever you do, stay away from Nationwide!!! We have a customer right now (I work for Farm Bureau) who has been in 3 accidents in the last 2 years, all with Nationwide customers, all were the Nationwide party's fault. They paid the first claim and flat out denied the last two. And contrary to common belief, Geico isn't all it's cracked up to be either.

Can I cancel my auto insurance?

I go through American Family and they are killin me. I recently bought a car from a dealership, which of course I had to get full coverage. My rate is now ridiculous and I have found a WAY better rate with a different company so my question is, can I just cancel my insurance? They sent me a bill for $434. I paid half of it today, do I need to pay the other half before I cancel? (Its just hard for me to make two $200 dollar payments for one bill)
I will have to renew my policy in October, and I don’t want to do that. I just don’t want to hurt my credit or receive cancellation fees, so whats the best way to do this?

Cancel your current policy (and get the refund for the unused portion) and go with the better deal (as long as it is ACTUALLY a better deal).

can we rent a car in America? i live in China and my American driver's license has expired since a while ago.

I also have no current auto insurance on any vehicle back in America. My wife holds a Chinese driver's license. If we go back to America in a few months and want to rent a car, would we be able to? I mean, she will be the driver (assuming her license is recognized in America as legal). Also, will rental car companies take debit cards just as they take credit cards? I don't see why not.

Your driver's license is no good here. She has to obtain international driver's license first. Then it should not matter as all international driver's licenses are pretty much treated the same.

As for debit, they probably will not. If you do not have enough on deposit, then it will be difficult for them to "charge" your account. Also if you were to stiff the rental company just by closing your account, they would have no recourse.

But the best is to just call a rental company in USA. Each company have different policies. They would know for sure. International calls are pretty cheap these days.

Does Obama’s suggestion of a “structured” bankruptcy for the American Auto companies help or hurt?

Is the incoming administration interested in saving the industry or just saving UAW jobs? Won’t a Structured Bankruptcy hurt auto suppliers, many of them small businesses and their employee’s? Why is our government so fast to GIVE the insurance industry (A.I.G.) 185 BILLION dollars, BAIL OUT bank after bank whose multi- millionaire CEO’s mismanaged their assets while absconding with tens of millions of our bail out dollars as “BONUSES”, but won’t LOAN less than 4 percent of that total public obligation to the autos? American cars are every bit as fuel efficient as imports and every bit as high quality… so where is the problem. Could the auto problems stem from among other factors a hostile uninformed press, overly generous UAW contracts which cost an average of near $80.00 per man hour for unskilled labor as compared to American “built ” Imports costing an average of under $40 per man hour and dried up liquidity in the financial markets due to government “regulation” (not deregulation) lowering the bar for mortgage qualification thereby destroying the free market system and injecting arbitrary governmental influence on financial institutions for the lofty goal of helping the poor “buy” houses. None of which had ANYTHING to do with the autos. Remember…the AIG deal was done in the dark of night with NO hearings or repudiations by dysfunctional and clearly unqualified members of congress. Our country needs a messiah FAST!
If bankruptcy is the answer…what about the tens of thousands of people that are employed at the suppliers that will be stiffed and ultimately are forced to file bankruptcy themselves… Is that the Barack Obama "bankruptcy" economic plan? I guess Bill Clinton (and now Barack Obama) never consider unintended consequences…like pre-911 when Bill Clinton dismantled our military and foreign intelligence operations …and then called it a PEACE dividend…and a federal surplus…Oh those pesky unintended consequences!

Definitely hurt. There are auto manufacturers for Toyota, Honda, and BMW with factories built in the US in the last decades, and these auto manufacturers don’t have the issue of the American manufacturers. This is insanity to not have pre-conditions to drastically reduce salaries and the resort hotel conferences and miscellaneous expenses. I worked with one of the auto manufacturers and can tell you first hand that they have too many managers and too much time on their hands, plus are over paid.

Would Universal Health Care help save the american auto industry?

I hear a lot of complaints about mismanagment of the american auto industry, however I believe that they were making exactly what americans wanted, large cars and were making a good profit out of it. Toyota makes large SUV’s and trucks too. So why are they (Toyota and other) doing relatively fine when american car companies are not?

Legacy costs. Japan has universal health care. And their “transplant” factories in america, do not have pensions. So they are not shackled with the legacy costs that the US automakers are with UAW contracts and pensions. A huge portion of the legacy costs are attributed to health insurance. If they were able to get ride of the health care costs due to a universal system. Would that not greatly help their bottom line?

In most countries, a universal health plan, without discussing its problems, would probably help its auto industry. Not in the U.S. The UAW would advance the argument that they gave up their blue ribbon coverage and demand to be paid for the loss of their negotiated coverage. There is no hope for Detroit. The the party who controls congress have placed 100 percent of the blame for the Big Three’s problems on its CEOs. The UAW has been commended for its sacrifices. So, there is really no solution to Detroit’s long term problem. Bankruptcy is the best hope for survival. Not many young people would buy a Big Three car. So, the loyalty argument fails.

Auto Insurance- Is it cheaper to get online or through an agent? Does it matter?

It is certainly more convenient to search for a new auto policy online, but is that the best rate? Will caling an agent yield a better deal?

Also I have 2 vehicles with liability insurance and I obviously cant drive both at the same time why does American Family make me pay for 2 policies, I mean WTF its liabilty and I only use the 2nd vehicle once in a blue moon. If I were to drive a friends vehicle I would be covered by my insurance without a separate policy…your thoughts..

Going through an agent will cost you more as the agent costs money.
You can save tons by buying from a site, but shopping around costs nothing so why not do both?
