Do I have to add my husband to my auto policy if he has his own insurance?

I (Wife) need to get insurance on my truck. My husband already has insurance on his truck in his name (Commercial insurance), do I have to add him to my policy? I am asking because he has had 1 ticket, and it is making my insurance sky high, and if I don't have to claim him, my premium is much lower.

Yes. That commercial insurance policy does NOT cover him, the way a personal auto insurance policy would – he has NO personal coverage, under that commercial policy.

So you need to add him. If you don't add him, then you have to EXCLUDE him from your policy – meaning, he has no coverage, and neither do you, if he drives your car. And HE has no coverage, AT ALL, if he's driving a borrowed vehicle, or rents a car, etc.

You go to the California Department of Insurance website, and look for Producer Licensing. That will explain what you have to do to get the license.

THEN you have to find an insurance company willing to let you sell their insurance. Good luck. They don't appoint "green" agents with no experience. The best way to get experience is to get hired as a CSR at an agency.

I am looking to start a career in the Insurance industry, specifically the commercial insurance industry, which I have heard can be extremely lucrative. I do not have any insurance experience, but have outside and inside sales experience in the mortgage and auto industry. I would be willing to start at the bottom, go through training, etc, to secure a position. I am not sure where to start or which companies to look at, does anyone have any suggestions.

The first thing you need to do is get some experience and about the only way to do that is in a trainee job. (I personally started out as a claims adjuster). You have to learn the insurance business. Most states require insurance agents to be licensed. It's a bit difficult to pass the license exam if you don't know anything about insurance.

There are also property casualty courses that you can take at most colleges. A Tech College or Junior college might be your best bet to start looking at that. It would give you the basics of what insurance is. There are so many different types of policies, especially in the commercial end of the business, you definitely need some background to get into this. Otherwise, you'll wind up getting sued for errors and omissions for not providing your client with the proper coverage.

Start with any of the major insurance companies or a broker. Most of them are always looking for trainees that want to get a start in the business.
