Royal and SunAlliance Insurance Company. It's the oldest and the no. 1 insurance company in UK. Overall profit and Loss paid was good.

When I shop for a home insurance I am always asked if my home is currently insured or if there are lapses in my insurance policy. Some companies outright refuse to give me a quote when I tell them that I haven’t had home insurance in the last 3-4 months. I am wondering why this is important for them?! Insurance companies are wary of lapses in any kind of insurance policies. In your case it just happened to be home insurance.

The single most feared factor in the insurance business is not hurricanes, not bush-fires, not wars, not meteor strikes but what’s known as ‘moral hazard’. Moral hazard is, in simple terms, lack of inhibition in preferring a claim under less than above-the-board circumstances.

For example, if your camera is insured for home use only, you cannot make a claim if the insured camera suffers damage during a jungle safari. Most of us, being honest persons, would not even want to claim under such circs. However, since, as a rule it takes all kinds to make this world, there exist individuals who would make a claim as if the damage occurred at home. Such individuals are considered to be ‘moral hazards’.

Coming back to your original question, insurance companies know from empirical evidence that the incidence of moral hazard is greater – much greater – in those cases where there’s a break iin coverage. It’s likely that the insured is trying to renew the policy after a loss has occurred.

You need to provide evidence to the insurance company that you did not intend to let the policy lapse. That it lapsed, is a fortuitous happenning (please note the wording – underwriters love such language) and not a deliberate omission. ‘I do not want to be penalised for something over which I had no control’ is the line you need to take. You could strike lucky with this line.

We have been paying on direct debit monthly for our Home Insurance for years. We have been with the same company for about 10 years and made 2 claims totally about £500. We cancelled and went to another company mid-way through our year and they sent us a bill saying we own the balance for this year. Do we actually owe them and must we pay?

Some insurance companies have a clause in their policy that requires that a policy cancelled mid term must be paid for in full. I would make sure that the agent gives you an explanation as to why you owe that premium as well as tell you where in the policy it states that. Once you have their side of it, pull out your policy and view it for yourself. In fact, you may want to look at the policy when you are speaking with your agent.

If the premium is "Fully Earned" then you DO owe the whole premium and you can't get any premium back for any reason. Although, the company may just be trying to get the money out of you, or it may be some sort of accounting error, so bring it up to your agent and let them explain it to you.

On the policy it has a different square footage than on the paper works when I bought the house (it's less), i was wondering if this is a big deal as it is a 25 square foot difference…where do they get the information? thanks!

Several ways – either you tell them, or they go to your property tax website (more accurate than you telling them) and see what the legal dimensions are, or they go out in person and measure and inspect.

Go outside and measure the outside of your house. If you're underinsured, it will be a BIG DEAL if you have a claim and can't get enough to fix your house. If you're overinsured, you're paying too much.

You're in Florida, on the coast. Your problem isn't finding the BEST company, it's finding someone willing to WRITE you at ANY PRICE. Lots of luck. You'll probably end up in the state company, Citizens.

Contact a few local insurance agents to see if they can help you. Be prepared to spend A LOT. You'll probably need three policies – one homeowners, excludes wind & flood, one wind policy, and one flood policy.

They died recently and I need to know how much their condo, the contents and their personal belongings were insured for.
They lived in Kelowna, B. C., Canada and both died recently. The estate administrator has not allowed me access to their personal papers, check books, etc.

I don't want to file a claim. I just want to know what their condo and it's contents and their personal possessions were valued at and insured for as they were part of their estate. I am one of the beneficiaries.

Only the Estate Administrator or Executor can legally find out this information. Even if you had the name of the insurance company they would not be allowed to give this information to you even if you are a beneficiary. The insurance company is only allowed to give this information to the Estate Administrator or Executor. You will just have to trust that the Estate Administrator will include everything in the estate valuation.
