Is it legal for a home insurance company to require renters insurance for a domestic partner?
NYS….When i mention it to other brokers they say it is not necessary and are surprised that they are requesting it. I don't see the reasoning behind it other than another way to bilk people. He does not rent and is not a tenant.
I had Allstate and they are not renewing due to hurricane risk. Go figure.
This may sound unusual but The contents are not my concern. I just want home owners insurance because the mortgage company requires it. To require me to have anyone living with me to also get renters insurance seems fishy. why would someone be able to sue him if they get hurt? Wouldn't they have to sue the owner of the property?
Thanks for your answers but you guys are making me paranoid. You're better off living alone and not having any visitors.just in case something should happen….which probably never would anyway.
From a Multi-Line General Agent
"No", It is not legal for your Home Insurer to require your domestic partner to obtain renters insurance unless they are actually a "Renter". It may also not be Illegal in your State of Residence. It is however definitely Unethical. If they do this, Then I would strongly recommend you find another more reputable Insurance Company or another Insurance Agent because I can assure you, they are just trying to milk you for more premium.
A domestic Partner is not a "Renter", they are a household member and a resident of your home/ No additional or separate coverage is required to cover them or their contents on your existing policy. A "household member" or "resident" does not have to be a blood or marriage related "family member" to be covered.
There are plenty of Captured Insurance agents out their that would like to scare you into buying additional coverage when none is needed. Remember that Insurance Agents work on commission, So the more you pay in premium, then the more commission we make.
Such a requirement is highly unethical and as a General Agent I would cancel any appointment my agencies have with that insurer and would no longer offer their product.

How long does an home insurance company legally have to settle or deny a claim?
claim was made two months ago.
typical and standard policies do mention under the “Additional Conditions” or “Loss Conditions” Sections that an insurance company should make payment 30 days after everything….and I mean “everything” is settled….in other words, if you have submitted all pertaining documents, loss declarations, and any other details requested from your adjusters AND your loss is settled and you agree to that settlement…THEN you are supposed to be paid within 30 days.
If your loss had to do with the dwelling / structure and you have a mortgage…try including you mortgage bank into the scenario, since they have a financial interest in that loss.
or…just ask your insurance rep “what’s going on”

Have U told your home insurance company to take a hike when the premiums went up & your claims coverage down?
background note I had a non-cancellable 20 yr old policy with State Farm here in Texas and I had never ever submitted a claim against my 1k deductible policy! I cancelled my policy 4 yrs ago!
I had paid off my mortgage when I did it!
Sounds like a great plan until something happens….
grease fire
hail storm
hurricane
tornado
burst water pipe
your dog bites someone
someone falls on your property
flood
tree falls on your house
theft
vandalism
just to name a few.
If you don't want to have insurance and want to gamble that nothing ever will happen….knock yourself out.
Personally, I don't recommend it.
But then I see what insurance is able to do for people every day. I know how much it costs to do repairs (and it ain't cheap)
But good luck to you…..I hope it works out for you.

I would like the name of a insurance company that will give home insurance to Pitt-bull owner?
I have lied for years about my dogs breed to my homeowners insurance company and I know that there is some out there that will insure me with a Pitt-bull breed. If someone could please let me know what companys do, or have in the past.
I dont know of ANY company that will do this. There ARE however a FEW companies that will write you a homeowners policy and EXCLUDE the liability for the dog. that way you do not have to lie to them. by lying on your application, you have voided your contract with them and they WILL deny claims and coverage based on the false information you provided. I know Alliance Mutual is a company that will exclude dogs…see if they write in your area.

What home insurance company is best when you need to make a claim?
Obvioulsy you have to pay for quality in this instance….
I am in the UK
I'm afraid to say that what you pay is no indication of how good the claims service will be. I wish it were, but pricing models just don't run that way. You could pay 500 and get great service or pay a 1,000 and get cr*p. I have to be honest and say that 90% of the time it's down to who gets your file. Claims departments are people and some people are better than others. Going with a personal recomendation is as good a way as any and I'm not knocking any of the suggestions above.
But, if you are in the UK… claims procedures and treating the customer fairly (TCF) rules are so strict for all companies that to be honest I'd just as soon go with the cheapest policy that meets your needs.
Maybe pay a little more than the cheapest to go with a recomendation…. but not much.
As for the suggestion that there are 'quotas' for claims payments… that's the most ridiculious thing I've heard in a long time….. there's no advantage in a company doing that even if they wanted to (it'd be illegal in the UK)… to explain why would just bore everyone but to suggest it shows a complete lack of understanding of the business. Thanks to who posted that though….. I needed a laugh.

Can a home owner insurance company refuse to cover a client because of bad credit in Florida?
I lost a reasonably good paying job and because I now have bad credit, I am having great difficulty in finding a Home owner's insurance company to carry me because my original company is leaving Florida.
Honey, likely your problem isn't your credit, it's your location.
NO ONE is writing new policies in Florida right now. You'll have to go to an independent agent, and end up with Citizens – they are the ONLY game in town. Florida windstorm for the wind, NFIP for the flood, Citizens for the rest.
There isn't ANY competition in Florida – you could have an 800 credit score, and it wouldn't change anything.
Your original company isn't the ONLY one leaving Florida – the very few companies that aren't flat out leaving FL, flat out aren't writing ANY new policies.
Yes, it's going to cost you an arm and a leg. Yes, you'll have to pay your annual premium up front. Yes, it's going to be like this for the next few YEARS, at least. And yes, the prices for Citizens, Flood, and Wind are going to skyrocket over the next few years, because Citizens is VASTLY underfunded ($80B in funding, including lines of credit, $400B in insured properties – if they were a REAL company, any state would put them in receivership for not being financially solvent).
Meanwhile take the next few years and knock yourself out to get the credit situation fixed – because if/when the insurance situation gets repaired in FL, THEN you're credit score will be an issue.
But to answer your direct question, yes, in ANY state except California, an insurance company can refuse to write your homeowners policy due to low credit score.

I had renters who burned down my home, my insurance company is reviewing the case any advise?
I have a home owners insurance policy and assumed that was enough coverage, the renters had renters insurance when they rented from me but did not keep up their payments. The insurance company said they need to review my claim because they are questioning whether my policy should cover this because I did not inform them of renters. My agent knew I was renting the property. I did not know that I was required to have a bigger policy than I already have. Isn't home owners coverage supposed to protect the home owner?
Home insurance covers lots of different things. I don't understand all the fine print of my policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always helpful. Try calling your agent or a agent in your city. http://www.easyhomeinsuranceguide.com They should be able to help you.

What can I expect when dealing with home insurance company?
My house has been destroyed by fire.We have replacement insurance.Who does the insurance adjuster work for?Do I have a nightmare coming my way.I feel kinda vulnerable now.Is there someone I can hire to deal with all the paper work for me?
The adjuster is an employee of the company. So, technically they "work for" the insurance company. That's where their pay check comes from.
But I suspect that you have a misunderstanding of what an insurance company is….what insurance is for. The purpose of insurance is to put you back where you were before the loss…..not better…..not worse. The adjusters job is not to give away the farm …solve all your financial problems…but their job is also not to cheat you…or rob you blind.
The adjuster is there to help walk you through the process. Their job is to honor the contract that was made between you and the insurance company when you purchased your policy.
A fire claim is not a fast process. These claims are closely investigated. Your adjuster will be able to explain the process. However, it will not be a fast process. Ask your adjuster any questions you have. That's what they are their for.
As far as hiring someone….in some states you can hire a "public adjuster". Not ever state allows these. They don't do the paperwork…you still have to do that yourself. It's your claim. But a public adjuster can double check what the company adjuster is doing. Keep in mind…..the public adjuster can be very expensive. They are usually paid a % of your settlement. So, you can hire a public adjuster, but expect to give him 10% or more of any settlement you get. That means….you have that much less money to rebuild with. (The company adjuster does not inflate your claim to cover the cost of you hiring a public adjuster. Your claim is worth what it's worth, regardless if you have a public adjuster or not. If you hire a public adjuster…you have to pay him).

Can anyone suggest a home insurance company that charges less premiums in Mississauga, Ontario Canada?
Going to buy a home and I'm tired of looking through the yellow pages. I just need a good list and anyone's good suggestion based on any claims and such.
My recommendation is to call your auto insurance agent and let them find a few quotes for you. If your Auto agent can't help you they should be able to find someone who can.
Good luck!
