Does anyone know of any insurance companies that will let you pay your homeowner’s insurance in installments? We’ve owned the home for 5 years now and we missed the deadline on our last policy.

Most insurance companies do! You just need to call around to some local agents.

How do homeowner's insurance companies know if people lie on claims?

If a person filed a claim for theft, burglary, or anything of the sort, how do the insurance companies know if they're lying or not? Even if people provide receipts or pictures, do they go through a process to make sure that the item was purchased by that person? You also have the right to black out any personal information, that way your credit card information will be secure. So what do insurance companies have to work with? If someone's crafty enough, they can forge receipts, take fake pictures, or find some way to obtain owner's manuals to provide fake proof.

There are red flags that tell us something is wrong.
But I'm not going to tell you what they are.

Also – you do have to file a police report — if its a fake claim….along with insurance fraud you can get charged with filing a false police report. That in itself is a felony. Insurance fraud is also a felony. And states are becoming more aggressive about prosecuting it.

Insurance fraud is not a victim less crime. Every time someone commits it — they might as well take your wallet out of your purse – open it and steal your money. It's the same thing. Insurance companies are business. So, just like the grocery store that raises prices because of theft…..insurance companies raise prices to cover theft. You, your friends, your family all pay higher premium because of crooks.

Anyone know of an insurance company writing homeowners insurance in Plaquemines Parish? Belle Chasse?

All I can find is not so Fair Plan! Checked with Louisiana Insurance Commissioner's web page and called every company on list but no one is writing. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Belle Chasse is within the protective levee system! We did not get water from the hurricane. House built 1959 and has never been flooded.

Not after Katrina. Nobody wants to take the risk.

Especially since parts of Plaquemines Parish are outside the hurricane levees.

Why do insurance companies ask if your house is within city limits, to give you a homeowners insurance quote?

Fire protection is a big concern for the insurance companies. The house location and better fire protection will have a lot to do with the cost of insurance.

can a mortgage company force you to buy homeowners insurance though a certain insurance company?

I thought it was legal for them to require you to have homeowners insurance, but not for the mortgage company to decide who you have to buy that insurance through.

A mortgage lender requiring you to purchase insurance through a particular company or agent is in violation with Truth In Lending Laws, as it’s not disclosed if there is any financial relationship between the lender and the insurer, with the Fair Housing laws requiring a borrower to conduct business with a particular insurance carrier, and probably several State Laws if the mortgage company is a licensed mortgage broker, a federally insured bank or a national bank.

The Deed of Trust used to secure the mortgage, or the Trust Deed, in some areas, usually states that the borrower is required to carry a policy of insurance …acceptable to the mortgagee, this means they may reject a policy if the have a good reason to do so, but they can’t require a particular insurer.

Give them the name of the institution and ask what agency has authpority over them. National Banks would be the Comptroller of Currency, State Banks is Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, If the lender is an Insurance Company they will also be under the Commissioner of Insurance. Each State also has it’s own Banking Authority.

I just recently changed my insurance to them and I can't find any information. I just want to know if they are a good company to go with.

They do fine. I filed a claim and they had an appraiser in my house the next day. Got a check two days later.

What is the most reputable homeowners insurance company to use in Florida?

I just moved from Florida. State Farm has a pretty good rep, and will give a multi line discount if you insure your car as well. If you don't occupy the home full time you will have difficulty. Many carriers have left Florida, and many others have raised their rates into the realm of ridiculous.
