I had about $2000 worth of tools stolen out of my truck tool box. Will my auto insurance cover this?
Someone mention my home owners insurance might pick it up. What's the best way to notify the local pawn shops so that they can keep an eye for these items? I did file the report with local police department.
Auto policy will not cover your personal property in it. Check with your homeowners company. If the tools are used for business purposes there is going to be a limitation. The limitation will vary from 250 to 1000 depending on the company. If the tools are used for personal use only then you would have coverage on them under the homeowners policy.
You can check with your auto insurance carrier, I doubt they will cover the loss. Just the same if someone stole personal items from inside your vehicle such as CD's, purse, etc.. I agree the only thing that might cover your loss is your home owners coverage.

Never will auto insurance cover that. The tools aren't part of the truck. You claim on your home insurance. If they are not listed on a rider, there will be a limit, assuming they are not used professionally, in which case you would need a commercial policy for them. The pawn shops aren't interested in talking to you, they get the lists of items to watch for from the police.

They might if your policy covers them and the tool box was locked and forced open…you'll have to itemize the items stolen and have receipts or current prices.

Don't expect either insurance to cover the cost. The tools are not part of the truck and Home Owners insurance covers the house and damages caused on the property (not theft).

Your auto policy might cover it but it depends on how it is written. If your truck tool box is permanent (bolted down) it may cover the tools inside. However, it will more likely be covered under your homeowners policy. Your deductible will apply.

Car insurance is for your car only (the ONLY other thing I have seen covered under your car insurance are child safety seats – & that is only if they were in an accident). Your tools will be covered by your homeowners policy, but this would be PERSONAL tools only. If they were your business tools you would have had to have a separate business policy just for your tools (commercial inland marine).
