laptop stolen from car – will landlord's home owner's insurance cover it? auto insurance doesnt…?
My car was broken-into and my mac was stolen. I had taken comprehensive auto insurance, but they say that auto insurance wont cover items lost due to vandalism and that it will be covered by home insurance. I live in a rented place and so dont have homeowner's insurance. Would the landlord's home insurance cover it, since the item belongs to the home that is owned by the homeowner?
The most qualified people to answer this question are the people your landlord is insured with, NOT people at yahoo.
Why not ask them and be done with.

You need to get renters insurance to cover your belongins. If there was a fire the landlords insurance would not cover your items.

Very doubtful. Homeowners insurance policies typically do not cover apartments or rented property. Even if the landlord were amenable to filing a fraudulent claim and pretending that the laptop belong to him / her, it would still be insurance fraud. As a landlord, I would not do it for a tenant. It just isn't right.
As a tenant you should have renters insurance.
Vandalism and theft are two different matters. Go back to your auto insurance carrier and plead your case again that your car wasn't vandalised, it was burglerized, eg stolen from.
Often times insurance claims need to be presented more than once in order to be honored.

NO the Landlord's insurance only reimburses the Landlord for his or her losses, not yours. You have to maintain Renters insurance and thats only good for what's in your home, not your car.
I have news for you buddy. If you had comprehensive (full) coverage on your car – IT COVERS VANDALISM!!! Your insurance agent is weaseling out on you. You need to confront him and flatly tell the man that you were paying full coverage for a reason – and that reason does not include your insurance company evading its duty.
You may need to see a lawyer – which will cost money (insurance companies know the average person cant afford to sue them and most wont) …, but go a step further and make sure they know you are going to the Better Business Bureau and you will be contacting your local TV Station.., assuming you do have one local TV station that helps the average Joe against big business who rip you off.

This is in response to the two morons that think your laptop is covered under your landlord's homeowners or your auto policy. Wrong. Unless your Mac is screwed to the dash of the car it is NOT considered a part of the vehicle, therefore it is NOT COVERED under your comprehensive. Your landlord didn't get HIS laptop stolen, therefore, NOT COVERED. Why didn't you have renters insurance? It's practically nothing.

No the item doesn't belong to the landlord. It belongs to you. As a landlord it's likely that he has coverage for his property but not the contents, unless you are renting the house furnished.
You would be wise to take out your own homeowners policy to be sure YOUR property is protected no matter where you live.
You can try & ask your landlord if he will file a claim for you, but I always expect insurance companies to find any way possible to wriggle out of paying a claim.
Now if it turns out that you can file a claim on your landlords policy, then you probably won't get much. Since 9/11, insurance premiums have risen so much that homeowners are forced to accept $1,000.00 or more deductable coverage. That means if your Mac is deemed to be worth about $1,100.00, you will only get $100.00 in your claim.
Cellphones, laptops, & ipods, are all high target items that should never be left in a vulnerable location like on the seat of a locked car. When you get your mac replaced, I hope you will keep it close to you from now on.
