Why does the US still not have Universal Health Care?

As a Canadian, I've always taken it for granted that if I'm sick or injured, my government will pay for my medical costs without me having to ever get out my cheque book or credit card (with the exception of prescriptions and some speciality services like chiropractic care). I see Health Care as a HUMAN RIGHT, not an option, and can't understand why more Americans aren't up in arms that their government wastes so much money on aggressive military acts yet neglects the health of its people so drastically.
Yes, we pay higher taxes in Canada. However, I would have to pay more than that in private insurance premiums if I lived in the US. Why aren't more Americans demanding that the governemtn provide universal health care, free of charge?

There's a good question! The first American president to propose a national health care system was U. S. Grant back in the 1870's. Almost every administration since then has come up with one scheme or another but none has ever made it through congress. I do know the AMA's (American Medical Association) membership is violently against any such thing as is the American Bar Association. It would appear that, since these two groups by themselves compose most of the wealth of the nation, they are the ones calling the shots and the rest of us should lay down and die quietly without making too much of a mess.
